Which Motorcycle Oil Weight Should I Choose?
Motorcycle oil weights like 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40, 10W-50 and 15W-50 describe how the oil flows at different temperatures.
The first number followed by “W” indicates how easily the oil flows when the engine is cold. The lower the number, the more easily the oil flows during cold starts. A lower “W” rating can be beneficial when riding in colder temperatures or when faster oil circulation at startup is desired.
The second number after the “-” describes the oil's viscosity at operating temperature. The higher the number, the thicker the oil remains as temperatures rise. A higher second number may be appropriate when riding in hotter temperatures or when the engine is subjected to sustained high loads and heat.
A 10W-40 is a common choice for everyday street riding, while 10W-50 or 15W-50 may be specified for motorcycles operating in hotter conditions or under greater loads.
