The first number followed by “W” indicates how easily the oil flows when the engine is cold. The lower the number, the more easily the oil flows during cold starts. A lower “W” rating can be beneficial when riding in colder temperatures or when faster oil circulation at startup is desired.
The second number after the “-” describes the oil's viscosity at operating temperature. The higher the number, the thicker the oil remains as temperatures rise. A higher second number may be appropriate when riding in hotter temperatures or when the engine is subjected to sustained high loads and heat.
